Course Section Number: | FRT-101-17 |
Department: | Freshman Tutorial |
Description: | Kurt Vonnegut, a Hoosier born and bred, was one of the finest fiction writers of the 20th century. His work is simultaneously profound and profane, and by equal turns deadly serious and downright silly. As the novelist Jay McInerney put it, "Vonnegut is a satirist with a heart, a moralist with a whoopee cushion, a cynic who wants to believe." In this class, we'll study a variety of Vonnegut's works from the middle part of the 20th century. Despite their age, we'll see that they remain remarkably timely as they explore, among other topics, the responsibilities of science in society, automation and its implications for work, the absurdity of war, personal and artistic authenticity, and what it means to be free and live a meaningful life. As you'll see, Vonnegut approaches these serious topics with his trademark blend of earnestness and an irreverent sense of humor, which makes his work a special delight to read. |
