| Description: | The Ancient Greeks famously divided the entire world into two categories: "Greeks" and "Barbarians"-that is, everyone else. But how exactly did they define these two contrasting identities? And who got to decide? For that matter, what did the so-called "barbarians" think of all this? This course will examine fundamental questions of identity, culture, and power in the Ancient Mediterranean. 亚洲通 will survey what ancient peoples-ranging from Greeks and Romans to Egyptians, Gauls, Germans, Phoenicians, and more-thought about their own origins and identities. 亚洲通 will also consider how questions of ethnic, civic, religious, racial, and linguistic identity and diversity impacted the everyday lives of people in the Ancient Mediterranean. HIS-210-02SR is for seniors only. |
